ADDITIONAL AREAS OF PRACTICE
Thanks to its codifications fundament, the Civil Law system no doubt enables to master in parallel many more areas of practice than the Common Law system, based upon judicial decisions. The latter is constantly changing because it is based on case law, by essence being constantly renewed by daily new Court decisions from dozens of different State/Federal Courts as well as from all Common Law jurisdictions. This forces Common Law practitioners to specialize in one, maximum two fields of law in order to keep abreast of its constant developments. Not so in Civil Law jurisdictions. As a Swiss lawyer trained and qualified in California law, I can move from one to several other fields. Additionally, we are often working in teams with one or more specialists in different fields of law and/or different jurisdictions.
